Amazon.co.uk Review

Alice Loudon is a successful London thirtysomething; she has the friends, the career, the flat and the loving boyfriend. Her life seems destined to follow a comfortable, conventional route until one morning her eyes lock with a beautiful, mesmerising man as she crosses a road. When Alice leaves work he is still there, waiting. Without exchanging names they go back to his Soho flat and have "obliterating sex". Unable to overcome her passionate feelings for him, Alice abandons the life she had established for herself to marry the powerful, taciturn Adam, a celebrated mountaineer but a virtual stranger. As their relationship develops, Alice discovers that Adam's beautiful exterior belies disturbing aggressive tendencies. He is by turns abusive and loving.

In an attempt to understand her new husband and her reaction to him, she launches an investigation into his past and, in particular, his past relationships. Sadly for her, the unsettling details she uncovers do not provide the reassurance she needs. Ultimately, Alice jeopardises her own safety to stay with a man she loves to the point of obsession but fears in equal measure. This book is a disturbing novel, describing the descent of a woman who had been totally in control of her own destiny--from being vibrant and strong to cowering behind an armchair as she hears her husband approaching. A roller coaster of a novel, the final heart-pounding finale is nothing short of a white knuckle ride. --Sarah Crawford

Product Description

Alice Loudon has everything: close friends, a loving boyfriend, a successful career. Then one day she meets a stranger while crossing the street and - impulsively - abandons her old, safe life for a passionate affair. It leads her into dark, dangerous territory . . . Adam Tallis teaches her things about herself she never knew. But as she learns more about her lover, she enters his world of risk and transgression - and begins to uncover a past filled with troubling secrets. Soon love and sexual obsession overwhelm her until they threaten everything: her safety, her sanity and, finally, her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping from Start to Finish, 11 May 2000
By A Customer
I'm usually put off by the words 'psychological thriller' and didn't expect to be so gripped by the characters and plot of this novel. I found the end of the first chapter a bit confusing and re-read it a couple of times to see what I'd missed but it all came together in the end. I cared what happened to the characters which meant that I couldn't wait to get on the train to work (very rare indeed!) to find out what happened next. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants something fairly easy to read and engaging at the same time. It was one of those rare occasions where I wasn't disappointed in the ending and the 'taster' of Nicci French's next novel at the back of the book was a very good tactic - I can't wait for it to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engrossing tale of obsession, 6 Jun 2005
By claire (DARLINGTON, CO.DURHAM United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Killing me Softly was the first Nicci French book that i ever read, and although i have since added three more to that number, none have gripped and engrossed me the way this one did. From the very first page French's introspective style of writing had me hooked.I found the description of Adams obsession was beautifully written. In the beggining i was able to identify with the main female character, understanding why she would give herself so totally to this attentive charismatic man. However as the story unfolded i found myself less able to understand her continued submissiveness.I agree with the other reviewer who said that even at the end of the book after all that Adam had done she still wanted to forgive him.I feel it is a credit to French that she could create a character who evokes such strong feelings from the reader.I found Killing me Softly engrossing and haunting, and i would highly recommend it to both male and female readers. It was a book which made me think long after i had finished it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully addictive., 15 May 2002
My first Nicci French novel and I'm definately hungry for more. I describe it as wonderfully addictive because like an addict I could not wait for my next hit. I started reading at bedtime and found myself unable to put the book down until it finally dropped from my exhausted limp hands. I picked it up first thing next morning and read all day between chores and children. The story was riveting, provoking and for the short time that I read, I was swept into Alice's world. I must admit though that my final feelings were probably not what they ought to be, for although I was a little scared of Adam by the end, I still retained the fascination that Nicci French had so wonderfully encouraged at the beginning. I felt the attraction of such a man and his eroticism. I wanted to know more about his motives, his feelings and so enthralled by him was I that I wanted to forgive him. I had little empathy with Alice by the conclusion and I think that my feelings were quite reverse to what I was intended to feel. Still, a good read and I'm looking out for more by this author right away.
